About The Event

The LHI event "Melville's Legacy for Law and the Humanities" took place at the U of Cincinnati College of Law and the Conservatory of Music there on 24-25 October 2025.

The great writer was remembered as a source of pleasure and wisdom during these troubled times. Sanford Levinson and David Caudill spoke on MOBY DICK, and a recognizable group resumed their debates on BILLY BUDD, SAILOR: Brook Thomas, Robin West, Richard Weisberg among others.

A musical interlude of superb selections from operas based on Melville's works highlighted the affair. The final panel included a paper on "Bartleby, the Scrivener" and Caudill's traditional banjo-accompanied musical summary of the entire event.

A lively discussion including a dozen or so comments from audience members demonstrated if such were needed that Herman Melville speaks to all generations in this otherwise A-I influenced world.
